Studying in Manchester School of Architecture (MSA) has
been my dream since I have decided to become an architect. This is because MSA
is one of the top architecture schools in the world. Besides that, I am very
passionate to enter MSA because I know that MSA has produced many famous
architect that is known worldwide such as Norman Foster and Stephen Hodder. Both
of them have greatly inspired me to continue my study in MSA.
Recently, I have visited The National Mosque of Malaysia,
Kuala Lumpur. The architects responsible in designing the building were Howard Ashley, Hisham
Albakri and Baharuddin Kassim. The construction of this building has finished
on 27th August 1965. The architects use the concept of the star as an
inspiration for this building as the star is the symbol of Islam besides
crescent. The mosque is special because the design is different from other
mosques in Malaysia as the tower measuring 73 meters looks like a folded
umbrella while the 18 star-shaped concrete roof looks like an expanded
umbrella. These aspects represent loyalty to the king; a norm in the Malaysian
society that was subtly included in the design which portrays exceptionally high
skill in the architecture field.
The greatest motivation for me to become an architect is
the Italian-born architect named Richard Rodgers, who built the famous Lloyds
Building which is situated in London. I really hope that I can become an
architect like him who is a creative and outstanding individual. He is not
afraid to try something new. This aspires me to become more like him
wanting to introduce new ideas in my design, such as the futuristic concept
which was created by Rodgers when he built the Lloyd Building. Besides that, Rodger’s
way of thinking to produce an architectural design that is ahead of its time is
inspiring for all future architects.
Since Rodgers is the one who inspires me to become an
architect, I would really like to visit his greatest creation; the Lloyd
Building. It was built in 1986 which was created by using the
futuristic concept. With this, Rodgers designed this building with all the
lifts and ventilations on the outer part of the building which at that time was
an architectural breakthrough. The purpose of this design was to maximise the indoor
usage. This invention gave the world a glimpse of the future - a phenomenon to
the architectural industry. Hence, I hope that with the evolving creativity in
architecture I can introduce a design of my own which can innovate architecture
and make the world a better place.
